Marilú Baca extended a warm and cordial welcome to each member attending this membership meeting. She said it had been an honor and privilege to serve as President for the last two years and that it was great to see so many of our long-time members in the audience this afternoon; she also extended a warm welcome to those new members who had just recently joined our Association.
Orphanage Funding Committee
By Bertha Luz Crofton
Mrs. Crofton greeted the audience and informed that on the evening of February 18th, while many of us were enjoying our splendid annual gala dinner, an important event was taking place among us, unbeknownst to all. She went on to tell us that a very distinguished recipient of “Amigos de Acapulco” aid and help throughout the years, Padre Angel, bought two tickets, paid in full, she added. He sent in his representation Dr. Gonzalo Avellaneda, M.D., a brilliant twenty-seven-year-old young man whose life was given a boost, among other things, by the friendly hand of our Association.
Dr. Avellaneda told Mrs. Crofton that every effort, big or small, is really worthwhile in lending a helping hand to the needy children of Acapulco. Bertha Luz, bursting with pride, wanted to share her feelings tonight, talking about this incident and expressing the pride she feels as she thinks of all the people AMIGOS DE ACAPULCO has helped to finish their professional studies.
She continued to say that the bylaws of The Friends of Acapulco state that Orphanage funding must be provided to enable the Homes to carry out their needed capital funding repairs, always in response to written requests. She indicated that subsequent site inspections were made to each Home to evaluate their more important capital requirements.
Mrs. Crofton reiterated that this is one of the Basic Programs of our Association, committed to improving the lives of children who lack the love and support of their biological families.
During the course of 2008, our Board decided to make modest donations to the Homes, due to the fact that during 2007 we made large grants for major capital improvements.
